Lighten Up 20160418aOne saying that I do my best to follow is “Never take life too seriously… you won’t get out of it alive anyway!” One of the best attributes a person can have is a sense of humor. That’s why I decided to start a new program called “WEIGHT LOSS FOR THE MIND: LIGHTEN-UP ™”. In both my hypnotherapy courses and my Kung Fu classes I have always tried to pass on to my students the idea that a person’s quality of life is enhanced greatly when they can see humor in the world around them. I’ve been told on more than one occasion that I should be a comedian because of the way I view the world. I have always taken that as a great complement. Life, in fact, is funny.

Here’s an example:
I was looking for new office space. When I arrived at one of the potential building locations I was greeted by a grumpy old fellow who told me that he, would be showing me the building. As we approached the entrance he waived his hand toward the building proudly stating, “this represents the entire building”. Hey, that’s funny stuff! I chuckled to myself. What would the entire building represent other than “the entire building”, but I guess that was his sales pitch. Then he asked me, “are you interested in the bigger half or the smaller half of the building.” That’s funny too! (Bigger half, smaller half ?????) This all happened within 5 minutes. I still had the rest of the day to go. Life is full of humor… even in the simplest of circumstances. You just have to be open to it.

SERIOUSLY FOLKS

One of the biggest pitfalls in life is that of taking ourselves too seriously. I’ve meet and work with thousands of people. I have noticed the best instructors in just about any field are those that have a lighter perception of themselves and of others. My belief is that teachers or instructors who attempt to portray themselves as stern all knowing, Guru’s (or Guruettes as the case may be), are those who most often lack the confidence and the base of knowledge that would allow them to simply, be at ease, with who they are and what they do.

I love the work I do. If tomorrow I were to decide that I didn’t like what I was doing I would quit. Each moment of life should be cherished. Life can be a pleasure if we simply view it with humor.

I suggest to my students that they imagine that they are lying on their deathbed. I ask them to imagine what they would do differently if this were actually the last day of their life. Then I encourage them to live whatever they say they would have changed now, because it is too late when death actually comes.

EXPECTATION

Our disappointments are a product of unrealistic expectations of ourselves and of others. The remainder result when we strive for what we think we should have instead of simply following what we love. Think about it… Haven’t most of your disappointments resulted from those times when you expected something from someone and they didn’t fulfill your hopes and expectations? Disappointment may also have come your way when you were didn’t live up to your expectations of yourself. When you expect a person to be someone other than who they are, or when you are untrue to your own nature, disappointment is usually the result. If you expect nothing then everything that comes your way is a gift.

PERCEPTION

Do you perceive the glass as half empty or half full? When you take yourself less seriously the world around you suddenly becomes less cumbersome. Slow down and observe life. See the humor around you. I promise you, it is everywhere. My opinion… comedy writers have an inexhaustible pool of material simply by observing the people and situations around them. Start within yourself. Our perception is our reality; so don’t take yourself or others too seriously. Lighten up! Lose the baggage that weighs heavy on your mind. Chances are you’ll life a longer and happier life.

Imagine This

imagine 20160418aAs adults, we often forget to use one of our greatest gifts in coping with the world and improving our lives: our imagination. When we were children, we’d play make-believe games, have imaginary friends, and fantasize about being princesses or superheroes. We could entertain ourselves for hours simply by playing with the toy inside our minds.

Our imagination gets out-of-shape when we don’t exercise it and feed it a steady diet of sit-coms and “reality” shows. Television and other technologies have made us passive consumers of entertainment rather than active creators during our leisure time. We continually surf the web or TV channels looking for more stimulation, rather than turning our attention inward to find a creative solution to boredom.

Wouldn’t it be great if we used some of our unallocated time to do something constructive? Then, we might find ourselves captivated by our own inner experience, rather than held captive by a generic, pre-fabricated reality manufactured by someone else often with a profit in mind.

Imagination is free, but it does exact a price if we don’t nurture and guide it towards the outcome we desire.

To illustrate, picture these two scenarios:

The night before a big job interview, you go over your resume
and imagine the questions you will be asked. Then you rehearse what you are going to say and how you are going to say it. You can hear the interviewer asking you the questions and you see yourself confidently answering in a calm and collected manner; your tone is consistent without hesitation; your posture is upright, yet relaxed; your breathing is deep and unhurried; then you see the end of the interview where you are offered the job. You shake the hand of your new employer, feeling excited and proud of your performance, internally saying “I did it!” while smiling ear to ear.

The night before the interview, you worry about everything that can go wrong. You imagine that the employer will scrutinize every single word on your resume and ask you questions you won’t be able to answer adequately. You think you have to be perfect in every way and you know what the interviewer is thinking and it’s highly critical. You see yourself as a nervous wreck, acting very self-consciously, looking down at the floor rather than making eye-contact. Your voice wavers when you speak and your insides are all knotted. You just want to get the interview over with so you can say that you at least tried to get the job. When you go to bed, you can’t sleep because you are filled with anxiety and end up getting half the rest you needed.

It’s not difficult to see that the person in scenario A, will do a lot better at the interview than the person in B, even if they don’t get the job. And we know this because we can imagine it, that is, we use our ability to project ourselves into a different setting and experience that scene as if it was real.

A is an example of someone using their imagination constructively, whereas B is misusing it. Moreover, B is not likely even aware of what they are doing. They may attribute their anxiety to their personality, past experience, or something or someone in their environment, but not to the way they are using their imagination.

Grown-ups have a tendency to forget their natural talents and get locked into fixed patterns of thinking and behaving. They forget what it’s like to look through the curious eyes of a child fascinated with the world. They forget that imagination is much more than child’s play.

Your Body Confidence Plan

Fitness 20160419aI’m sure you have heard the saying, “You are what you eat,” but more accurately the saying should say, “You are what you metabolize.” We all want to be healthy, fit and energetic; in essence we want to look and feel our best. We can achieve this goal by cultivating balance (homeostasis) among the systems of our bodies. My nutrition program in partnership with Venice Nutrition teaches you how to optimize your endocrine, digestive, nervous, respiratory and muscular systems to create balance within your body and achieve ultimate health with a customized Body Confidence Plan. You will look great and even more importantly, FEEL great!

Learning how to cultivate systemic balance in your own body, including incorporating good nutrition and exercise into your lifestyle, is like building a house. Phase one is laying down the foundation of the house. Phase two is building the house. Phase three is maintaining the house.

Phase One

In Phase One we begin building a health structure that works within your lifestyle. Having a plan and staying consistent is everything when it comes to succeeding in health. In life you need a game plan and the first phase of health is to create that plan.

There are five parts to your health structure:

Sleep
Nutrition
Exercise
Supplements
Water

I. Sleep
Sleep is number one on this list, because it is fundamental to a good health structure. The adrenal gland is part of the endocrine system and is similar to a cell phone battery. Every night most people charge their cell phone, leaving it fresh and ready to make unlimited calls the following day. So what happens when you forget to charge the battery one night? It quickly runs out of juice and becomes inefficient as a communication device. Your adrenal gland functions in a similar way. Each night your body uses sleep to recharge. If the day is begun rested, your five systems work much more efficiently. If sleep has been neglected, your body will function at a lower level. Remember you are what you metabolize, so lack of sleep prevents proper metabolization of nutrients and slows fat loss.

II. Nutrition
Nutrition is a key tool to stabilizing blood sugar and maximizing lipolysis (the breakdown and release of fat). We accomplish this with three key components:
Meal intervals
Nutrient ratios per Meal
Calories per Meal
Your blood sugar must be stable in order for your body to utilize stored fat for fuel. A baby’s eating habits are a fantastic example of how to stabilize blood sugar. A baby eats every three to four hours on a nutritional substance containing a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat (breast milk or formula), never overfeeding or underfeeding, eating when they feel hungry, and stopping when satisfied. We too can continue this effective method in a way that matches our lifestyle. Frequent meals are a must for optimizing health. Quantity and nutrient ratio (protein, fat, and carbohydrate) should be adjusted on a meal-to-meal basis depending on activity, stress, and body composition. Keeping the blood sugar stable and learning the necessary adjustments to make that happen is the reason my nutrition program is special.

III. Exercise
Sleep and nutrition are used to create balance and release stored fat, and exercise is used to burn up the fat. Exercise is what burns energy and speeds metabolism. Muscle is what controls your metabolism. Here are the three main benefits to building muscle:
Fat is burned in muscle.
One pound of muscle is 3 times smaller than one pound of fat.
Each pound of muscle burns approximately 30-50 calories per day.
This means that the purpose of exercising is to build muscle for a more efficient metabolism.

Increased Muscle = Accelerated Fat Burning

IV. Supplements
The foundation of a balanced nutrition program should always be whole food, however in the modern day it can be very challenging to get all the essential nutrients you need through diet alone. For this reason, Venice Nutrition recommends taking certain supplements to ensure you receive the correct amount of vitamins, minerals and enzymes each day. Having deficiencies in any nutrient can lead to a variety of biological and/or physiological problems.

V. Water
Water is probably the most underestimated essential nutrient with regard to nutrition. It should be noted that the human body can survive for up to 5 weeks without protein, carbohydrates, and/or fats, and only 5 days at the max without water.
Water performs three important biological functions in the human body:
It provides turgor (tension of the cellular walls) and form to the body.
It provides the fluid environment required for normal cell metabolism.
It regulates the temperature of the body.
Water is critical to every function of the body!

Phase Two

In Phase Two you begin to micromanage the health structure (foundation) you built in Phase One on a day-to-day basis (building your house). So now that you have the health structure in place, what happens when day-to-day life gets in the way? Perhaps you have a few restless nights of sleep or work gets hectic and exercise is missed for a week. This is when most nutrition programs falter, and a domino effect begins as gains are lost. The beauty of my nutrition program is that you learn how to make the necessary adjustments to maintain homeostasis (balance) regardless of how challenging life becomes, so you are able to maintain homeostasis when life is challenging and to progress when life is running smoothly.

Phase Three

In Phase Three you learn how to micromanage your health structure for life (maintaining your house). Now that your health structure is complete and you have the ability to maintain the structure on a day-to-day basis, you must learn how to stay consistent for life. Venice Nutrition has created 4 aspects of life called The Quadrant:
Health – (sleep, nutrition, exercise, supplements, and water)
Relationships – (spouse, partner, children, parents, friends, etc.)
Profession – (anything job related)
Lifestyle – (recreation)

I specialize in teaching you how to micromanage your health forever. If a tragedy occurs (family illness, loss of job, financial difficulties, etc.) or a joyous event occurs (birth of a baby, getting married, new job, etc.) I provide my clients the necessary tools to keep their health structure in check through any circumstance. The one thing that you can control in life how you take care of yourself.

Once you learn how to use the tools during all three phases, you can permanently maximize your quality of life. Poor health makes every aspect of life (job, relationships, family, etc.) a struggle. We have the solutions! I am excited to teach my clients the power of the Body Confidence Plan!

We asked current students, past students and people inquiring about our training, what they felt the biggest obstacle(s) in committing to certification training was for them when considering enrollment. We listened to you and we think our New Course Format addresses the most significant reasons why potential students sometime struggle with the decision of enrolling.

Student Training Options

Option 1: 

For those wanting certification, advanced certification or instructor certification:

Register for a full certification course(s) in its entirety (As We Have Had In The Past)

For those who want to study certain specific topics but already have certification.

For those who for, any other reason, are not looking for certification.

For those who cannot currently take the time and/or money to travel to our location(s)

For those who cannot currently devote significant blocks of time off from work, family
obligations, etc. to enroll in an entire certification course, but want to certify over time.

Now we offer you the ability to enroll in individual course modules where you can accumulate the course training and  hours needed for certification over time (Max allowed – 2 years). Using this option, students complete each module separately and take the exam for that module. When the student successfully completes/passes a module, he or she receives a certificate of completion for that class/module. When the student has fulfilled all certification course obligations and completed all of the required modules for certification, he or she is eligible to take the certification exam. Upon passing the exam, the student will then receive certification. 
Prerequisites for certification remain the same as with enrollment in an entire certification course.

We Make It Even Easier For You

1. Students attend the academic portion of the class online from home, a hotel, or the beach in Tahiti, via live class meetings by web-meeting technology. All classes are video recorded. If a student must, for legitimate reason, miss a class, he or she can study the class video recording and take a quiz on the content of that class missed (some restrictions apply). There are class sessions where students are required to have a volunteer subject present to practice and demonstrate with, so that the instructor can evaluate the student’s progress in terms of practical application of the academics learned.

2. The final stage of the Primary Certification Program called the “Practicum”, requires the student to be at the instructor’s location, but for students who for justifiable reasons can’t make the trip to the BodySmart Wellness offices, a special waiver can be requested. (approval at the discretion of the instructor). When a waiver is granted, the student does not have to attend class physically, but is required to have a volunteer subject present for the entire practicum portion of the course. (Practicum: Graduating students conduct hypnotherapy sessions with volunteer subjects from the general public, under the supervision of the course instructor.)

Philip lives with wife Marie, Dogs Dexter and Oscar and cats Nico and Luna. Philip and Marie have 5 children (1 girl 4 boys). Marie is a physician specializing in Psychiatry and in Anti Aging Medicine. As well, they recently began a real estate business called Family Comes First Homes. ( http://familycomesfirsthomes.com/ ). Philip Holder is an internationally renowned meditation and Kung Fu Grandmaster. MUSIC

Phil has played music since age 11 or 12. He plays, guitar, piano, organ, and drums and is an accomplished vocalist. He had his first band when 12 in which he sang and played guitar. He consistently played for many, many years thereafter, first as an amateur and after college as a professional full time musician. Deciding it was time to go to college he again went to playing music part time. Although he plays 5 instruments, for most of his music career he has been a lead vocalist and front man. He has a broad vocal range and can sing almost anything. Entertainment value is just as important to him as the music. Although a unique and original performer in his own right people sometime say he’s Mic Jagger-ish or Steven Tyler-ish. He enjoys music like Eagles, Aerosmith, Allman Brothers, Bon Jovi, Matchbox 20, and others old and new. Phil focuses on making quality music and providing great entertainment.
